Just before we went up in the tiny Cessna airplane, I remember being filled with a healthy bit of anxiety. It was a cool December afternoon and a few spectators had arrived to witness my first jump. (for video of this-click here.) Believe it or not, skydiving is relatively safe statistically speaking. I know, you may be skeptical; I had to convince my wife of this too. You are twice as likely to die for instance while scuba diving. Maybe you didn’t know that skydivers have 2 chutes,
and if by chance you happen to be unconscious by the time you fall within 1000 feet of the earth your backup chute can deploy automatically with computerized assistance! I know what you are thinking now- ‘Sign me up!?’ All in all, chances of survival are pretty good, considering you jumped out of a plane in midair. BASE jumping however, is a slightly different story. The inherent risk is many times greater.
BASE jumpers you see, usually only have one parachute. If the primary chute is faulty, there is no time to deploy a back up chute. Thus, there is no purpose to even pack a second one. BASE jumping is ultimate dependence on one chance for survival. If you wait too long to pull the cord, there will be very real consequences that will last forever. As a matter of fact, the sooner you do it, the better. Watch this clip:
Life is really like one big BASE jump. Compared to eternity, our life on earth is brief and the truth is, we only have one hope for salvation. If you wait too long it will be too late. David talks about the brevity of life in this passage:
Psalm 39:4-6
4 "LORD, reveal to me the end of my life and the number of my days. Let me know how transitory I am.
5 You, indeed, have made my days short in length, and my life span as nothing in Your sight. Yes, every mortal man is only a vapor. Selah
6 Certainly, man walks about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they frantically rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them.
There will be no time at the end for me to second guess whether I put my hope in the right place. The life we live here on earth is but a vapor. Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." John 14:6- Jesus Christ himself claims that He is the only way to God and to Heaven.
In the fleeting moments that I will be on this planet, I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that I have already found God’s greatest gift: Salvation in Jesus Christ. Just as the jumper has only one parachute for survival, there is only one way to receive salvation and that is through Jesus Christ. I have no back up plan. He is my only hope. Do you know, that you know, that you know, beyond the shadow of a doubt that your salvation is secure? Facebook me or email me if you have questions. Don't wait too long to put your trust in Him.
